Question 1: What types of patent can be provided in Macao?
Answer: There are three types of patents in Macao: invention, utility models and industrial designs and models. The protection terms are 20 years, 10 years and 25 years respectively.

Question 2: What language is required in Macao patent applications?
Answer: The patent applications in Macao shall be filed in Chinese or Portuguese.

Question 3: What documents are required for a patent application for an invention in Macao?
Answer:
  • The completed Invention Patent Registration Application Form;
  • Summary of Invention Patent (the explanation should not exceed 150 words or 400 characters);
  • Description of Invention Patent;
  • Claim;
  • Where appropriate, the application should be accompanied by the following documents:
    • descriptive drawings;
    • power of attorney;
  • documents proving the priority right claim;
  • if the documents and/or certificates are not written in Chinese or Portuguese, the translated copies are required for submission;
  • if the applicant requests the State Intellectual Property Office in the mainland to prepare the report of the examination, all necessary documents submitted should be written in Chinese or translated into Chinese.
